Cannabis Extract Safety in the Wake of VapeGate

One of the questions we’re frequently asked by consumers is about the safety of our products – particularly after VapeGate, the vaping crisis of 2019 that had a significant impact on the cannabis market.

People wanted to know what was in their products and product hardware, and with good reason!

While it was a tragedy that so many people were negatively affected by toxic product and materials, it brought an important awareness to both producers’ and regulators’ minds – as well as consumers – about what goes into these products and moving toward a more transparent culture of safety.

Dabstract has been committed to transparency and product safety from Day 1. Our consumers’ health, safety, and enjoyment are our highest priority, and all Dabstract products are (and have always been) crafted with care and precision from 100% cannabis-derived ingredients. We set a high standard of excellence and constantly strive to exceed expectations – as well as the safety and quality benchmarks required by law.
We already had a thorough product safety protocol implemented pre-VapeGate, including stringent hardware and product vetting.

But when we started to receive a flood of questions about what exactly is in our products after the anxiety-inducing news headlines of late 2019, we implemented additional safety procedures and levels of transparency such as adding a product safety page to our website and Instagram highlights for easy consumer access. We also put more emphasis on investigating our supply chain partners, their products, and their facilities, as well as increasing our pesticide standards to exceed the state requirements.

Below is a brief overview of some of the safety, product, and hardware standards that we’ve had in place from Day 1:

  • Pesticide Screening – All flower that goes into our products is rigorously tested for pesticides before coming into the Dabstract laboratory. Although the state of Washington does not require this, we have voluntarily chosen to do this from the beginning.

  • Residual Solvent – Solvents are used to extract cannabinoids, terpenes and phytochemicals that give cannabis oils their distinct potencies, aromas and flavors, and are a necessary part of the extraction process. Washington mandates that product is deemed safe for the market with residual solvents up to 5000 parts per million. Our products come to you with under 500 parts per million.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) –  All of our laboratory employees are required to wear PPE including hair nets, beard guards, goggles, gowns and gloves designed to ensure that your product is manufactured in the most clean and unadulterated way.

  • 510 Thread Pen Cartridges – We use carts that employ a cutting-edge technology that changes the way the oil is absorbed, as well as the way it is heated and vaporized. The coils are fully enclosed within a non-toxic ceramic core, unlike many other cartridges available in the legal market.

PAX Pods

PAX Pods are free of heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins in both the hardware itself and the vapor produced. PAX has designed a unique non-reactive wick, meaning that the wick will not char or leak into the pod’s oil. No thinners or thickeners, cutting agents/fillers, artificial terpenes, food grade terpenes, botanical terpenes, flavorings, Vitamin E acetate, Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) or Polyethylene Glycol (PEG).

We encourage consumers to do their own research before purchasing cannabis extraction products. Here are a few key questions to ask, whether you’re looking into a new brand or trying to find information on a brand you already love:

  • Are they a reputable, legal, and well-established brand?

  • Does the brand offer transparency when it comes to their product safety?

  • Where does the product hardware come from, and what types of materials are used?

  • Do they use cutting or filling agents?

  • What are the safety standards for the flower used to make their products?

When you have a product in your hands with the Dabstract logo, you can rest assured that it is of the highest quality. Dabstract stands for integrity and transparency. Always has, always will.
