Why We Name Our Live Resin Concentrates the Way We Do

In cannabis, names change fast.

What one market calls “diamonds and sauce,” another might call something completely different. New terms pop up, trends take hold, and suddenly the same product has three different names depending on who you ask.

At Dabstract, we’ve taken a different approach.

We’ve kept our names.

Not because we aren’t aware of industry trends, but because our naming conventions come from a time when those trends didn’t exist yet.

Built in the Early Days

Dabstract has been around since the early days of BHO extraction. Back when the category was still being defined, there wasn’t a universal language for concentrates. People were experimenting—both in the lab and in how they described what they were making.

We were part of that.

From working with some of the first extraction equipment to developing textures that are now widely recognized, we helped shape what the concentrate category looks like today. And when it came time to name these products, we didn’t follow a playbook—we created one.

Those names stuck with us.

And they still do.

Our Names, Explained

Over time, the industry standardized certain terms. Ours didn’t always match—and that’s okay. What matters most is what’s inside the jar.

Here’s how our lineup translates:

Live Resin Gems & Juice

Gems & Juice

What many people now call “diamonds and sauce.”

For us, Gems & Juice reflects the experience. The “gems” are large THCa crystals, while the “juice” is the terpene-rich sauce surrounding them. It’s a format that lets you tailor your dab—more potency, more flavor, or a balance of both.

Live Resin Cake Icing

Cake Icing

Commonly known as badder or budder.

Cake Icing describes the texture better than anything else we could call it. Smooth, whipped, and easy to work with—it spreads and scoops just like you’d expect. The name is simple, but it tells you exactly what you’re getting.

Live Resin Terp Sugar

Terp Sugar

Often referred to simply as “sugar.”

This is one of our original formulations. A balance of microcrystalline structure and terpene-rich sauce, Terp Sugar is all about preserving the natural expression of the strain. The name puts the focus where we believe it belongs—on the terpenes.

Why We Haven’t Changed

We understand that the industry has evolved. Naming conventions have become more standardized, and in some cases, more marketable.

But for us, these names are part of our history.

They reflect where we came from—when the category was still being built, not just branded. Changing them now wouldn’t make our products better. It would just make them newer.

And that’s not what we’re chasing.

The Dabstract Difference

For Dabstract, it’s never been about following trends. It’s about staying true to the plant, preserving terpene profiles, and creating products that reflect the genetics behind them.

The names are just an extension of that philosophy.

They’re simple. They’re intentional. And they’re ours.
